Getting Around

The newly opened Minangkabau International Airport in Ketaping, Padang Pariaman serves daily domestic flights from Padang to Jakarta, Medan and Palembang, plus international flights to Kuala Lumpur. Padang also can be reached by ship from other islands, including from Jakarta. A number of public buses also have routes to Padang from various cities. The Padang-Jakarta journey can takes more than 38 hours by bus.

How to get around in Padang?

  • The most convenient way to get around is to rent a car with driver
  • To reach tourist sites, such as Padang Beach, Siti Nurbaya Bridge, even Air Manis Beach which is a bit far from the city center, you can use public transportation called angkot or buses or motorcycles taxis (ojek)
  • The railway lines connect the Padang city with number of locations, such as Padang Panjang and Pariaman
  • Although slower, a more romantic option is to take a bendi (a horse drawn cart) in some places
