Palembang has been split by one of the longest and widest river in Indonesia, the Musi River. The river has many ramify tributaries, hence the city is known as “The Venice of the East”.

Getting Around

Palembang also has three main ports, Tanjung Api-Api (which is the International harbor of Palembang), 36 Ilir and Boom Baru on riverside. From Tanjung Api-Api Port, there are ferries from Palembang to Tanjung Kalian Port in western side of Bangka Island and also Batam Island.
Buses are also available from other cities, including Jakarta, Padang, Bukit Tinggi, Jambi, Pekanbaru, Dumai, or Bengkulu. Trains connect Palembang to Bandar Lampung, Tanjung Enim, Lahat and Lubuk Linggau. The largest railway station in Palembang is Kertapati Station.
Palembang is also possible to reach by car from Jakarta. The driving time is around 20 hours. It is also a great experience to cross the Sunda Strait from Port Merak.
