Getting Around

How to go solo backpacking to Flores?

  • Arrange route wisely. Especially if you are just visit Flores less than a week. Do not repeat the travel route so that you can save more money and time.
  • Start the trip from the east (Larantuka or Maumere) and end it in the west (Labuan Bajo).
  • You can also rent a motorbike or take public transportation to explore Flores but it is safer to travel in a group.
  • Be careful when renting a private car or motorcycle taxi (ojek) because some roads are very narrow and only has a width of one car. The terrain is also quite dangerous because there are many turns and hills. It would be more convenient if you rent a private car or motorcycle complete with driver.

  • Flores people are very friendly and they usually will smile at people that they meet. Behave respectfully and politely when you visit to the local village
  • Please bring along your own food and drinks during the trip to one spot to another
  • Bus or minibus available in some areas of the island. Bemo (rural public transportation) also can be found in a number of areas.
  • Women having their menstruation must report to a guide or ranger for special attention in Komodo Island. Komodos have a very strong sense of smell and may turn aggressive when they smell blood.
  • Most lands in Komodo and Rinca Islands are savannas which are prone to fire during the dry season so smoking and making fires are prohibited.
