I love Makassar. I think it is for the traveller and not the tourist but I am old and I don't like Kuta in Bali that much. There are some very good hotels in Makassar. Do not miss Paotere Harbour...

"Not a reason to travel to Makassar but a good way to spend and hour or so walking before dinner"

Not a beach in the sense of sand, waves, etc but more a concrete sea wall with a sidewalk and some signs/statues for people to take photos with. That said, you can still enjoy somewhat of a breeze...
